La Memoria del Muerto, directed by Valentin Javier Diment, tells the tale of Alicia (Lola Berthet), who invites five of her husband’s closet friends over after his death. Little do they know, though, that Alicia has called them there to slaughter them one by one in order to bring her husband back from the dead through an elaborate ritual.
Like an exquisite horror movie, La Memoria del Muerto gives each character a unique, yet terrifying backstory; each character must face their horrific demons. One character relives life with her sexually abusive father, and Nicanor (Matias Marmorato) is forced to face his dead sister who his mother always fancied more than him.
This particular scene actually terrified me. At the beginning of this scene, a childlike creature enters, riding a tricycle. (A little like Saw, right?) It slowly saunters up to Nicanor, and the audience can clearly see it has no face. However, it begins, with a piece of glass, to carve itself two small eyeholes and a mouth. Then, it begins extracting Nicanor’s teeth and eyeballs, and placing these body parts within its own mouth. (Now, I love horror, but even this freaked me out.)
There are more gory scenes, too, like the one mentioned above. In one scene, the audience watches a mother sew her own eyes and mouth shut, and then force them open again. Another scene, which is quite disturbing, shows a mother and son’s tongue becoming one after they share a passionate kiss.
And yes, I highly appreciate this movie because it has a wonderful ending; such a twist! (I shan’t spoil it for you. I do, however, recommend it!)
La Memoria del Muerto was a disturbing, yet creative horror movie, with a splash of comedy embedded into its twisted plot. If you like creepy, then you definitely need to watch this film!
